5 steps to rock your vision |
What do you think of when you hear the word ‘vision?’ Our first thought is often our eyesight, one of our most important senses through which we’re able to integrate the world around us. However, vision can also define a set of guideposts for living an intentional life. It can help to light our ways through myriad life choices and directions. But, what does this really mean and how can we create a vision that guides us toward our best potential?

To live with intention is to depart from your comfort zone, that mindless, habitual state of unconsciousness that is more doing than being. Eckhart Tolle says “What a liberation to realize that the 'voice in my head' is not who I am. Who am I then? The one who sees that.” Be the one who sees your life. Notice the who of you, cultivate that relationship and choose a direction. This could be a goal, a lifestyle, or a higher setting on your spiritual dial. Be the chooser.
Today, more than ever before, we are particularly challenged by a sea of distraction that engulfs us with interrupted attention. All the diversions, that try to hijack both our precious time and the energy we have each day to invest in our daily lives, seem to overshadow our agenda. It’s no wonder, then, that so many of us struggle to stay on track with our important goals. What can we do?
While I sure don’t claim to have all the answers to this dilemma, I have found a few strategies to be reliably helpful.
Strategy #1: Revisit your VALUES. Write them down.
Know your values first. Being able to identify and understand our values provides us with a sense of purpose and direction-driven goal setting. Without periodically inventorying our values, we can get lost in all the in-vogue flavors of the day or other people’s expectations of us. Knowing who we are and what matters to us provides us with structure around our decision-making.
Strategy #2: Consider the ACTIVITIES that bring you joy. Write them down.
Ask yourself: what are 5 to 10 things that you most enjoy doing? Be honest about which things truly fulfill you mentally, physically, emotionally, socially, playfully and spiritually. Activities that feel joyful usually boost your vibe rather than depleting it. If something feels like an energy zapper, reconsider its place in your life.
Strategy #3: What do you most wish to LEARN? Make a list or mind map.
Perhaps there are talents you’d like to acquire, experiences you’d like to have, or a field of study you’d like to pursue. Mapping your curiosities and interests on paper or with an app supports healthy brainstorming, identifying new opportunities, organizing thoughts and communicating ideas.
Strategy #4: Consider your LEGACY.
Where do you want to be in 5 years? How about in 10 or even 20 years? How do you wish to be remembered or most want your life to be described by family, friends or colleagues? In what ways do you foresee the arc of your actions and choices to align with your closely held values? What will you do to build this legacy?
Strategy #5: Write down your GOALS.
Aim to have your personal vision statement encompass a variety of the important dimensions in your life: emotional, physical, spiritual, social, family, vocation, and fun. Then list one goal for each. Think of your goals as the sign-posts along the route toward your destination, or the stepping stones along your path. And remember, the best goals are SMART goals - specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time-bound.
Now, write your personal vision statement. Aim for a single, short, passionate sentence that is clear, easy to express, and propels your action plan. Post your vision in places where you can see it daily to inspire you to reach your important goals. And, don’t ever be afraid to adjust your vision as your grow and your life expands.
Just as finding our way on the road without a map may leave us lost and confused, living without vision feels like swimming in circles.
Sometimes it can be valuable to have the assistance of an experienced and knowledgeable mentor to guide you through the process of reaching your goals. It’s also helpful to have someone who can help keep you accountable on your journey and help you get back on track when needed.
